South Africa’s Volmoed Youth Drummers for Unity and Healing visit the States

The Volmoed Youth Drummers visited the United States from 8 to 25 November 2024 to promote unity and healing. During their trip through the USA Midwest, they participated in various events, including school programmes and church services, sharing their message of togetherness and understanding within communities. Their presence aimed to inspire hope and connection among the audiences they engaged with.

One of the main reasons for their visit was to attend the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) in Indianapolis, where they interacted with some of the world’s best drum circle leaders.

The visit was made possible after a delegation from the Indiana Center for Middle East Peace in Fort Wayne, Indiana, visited South Africa and spent time with the young drummers in Zwelihle, Hermanus.

Towns and cities visited include Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Tecumseh and Adrian (Michigan – where they drummed and danced with some Dominican nuns!) as well as Goshen, Elkhart and Chicago.

The climax of the visit happened in Chicago where we were able to drum, sing and dance with the congregation of Trinity United Church. Pastor Otis Moss III warmly welcomed the group and through sermon and song gave back to us what we took to the USA: unity and healing.
