Highlights of the week, and a spotlight for next week

  1. A big thank you for all your support for us, both financially and otherwise. We received a wonderful donation from the Hiza’s in London as well as from Ahnee in Indiana! Several of you also indicated that you would like to be VYLTP ambassadors and donors for the 10/10/10 campaign. We will soon list your names on our website.
  2. The George Diocese were exceptional in their hospitality and generosity on Monday night and Tuesday morning. Special thanks to Bishop Edwin, Dean Lyndon and Rev Russell and their families and the young people and other parishioners from the parishes who joined us on Monday night.
  3. We popped in at Dan and Daphne Vaughn in Sedgefield on Tuesday morning. For those who do not know, Dan was really the “number two to Tutu” from the late 1970s and was even there in the 2010s. He is 95 now and they really appreciated our visit, the songs and the prayer.
  4. The people of Makhanda/Grahamstown were equally welcoming and generous, feeding us wherever we visited. It was great to drum with some children and young people in Joza township and to build relationship especially with the clergy and of course also to be welcomed at the theological seminary (COTT) by Dr Percy.
  5. Drumming inside the Grahamstown Cathedral on Wednesday started off very well. Our aim was to “bring the roof down”. We achieved that when one of the priests suggested we drum just outside the Cathedral. Suddenly there was no roof!
  6. Last night the young people attended a wonderful theatre production by Janice Honeyman called “Malo and the moon maiden”. They were blown away by the beauty of the production. It was a first time at the theatre for almost all of them. We travel back tomorrow.
  7. We received a request from a student in PE/Gqeberha who want to write her master’s thesis on VYLTP and Taizé. I have been in touch with her and we will do a Teams call about it this week. Very exciting…

Spotlight on generational wellness

Partnering with Stellenbosch University

This week we welcome two of our alumnae (Sam and Janalene White) who will visit us on Tuesday. They are based in Atlanta, Georgia. And then (drumroll…) we have been asked to be part of
a 3-year project with Prof Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela’s unit called AVREQ at Stellenbosch University. (For those who do not know, Pumla is one of Volmoed’s patrons but also the last recipient of the Templeton prize). The project will focus on transmitting “generational wellness” – as opposed to generational trauma – and will involve young people from South Africa, Ghana and Tanzania.

Please hold it all in your prayers …
