WhatsApp weekly update 25–29 August 2025

Friends: The 62% youth unemployment rate in South Africa is the greatest challenge we face as a country. VYLTP tries to tackle this challenge head-on and we are learning many lessons which we hope can be replicated nationally. Thanks to all of you for your support and encouragement. Here and the highlights and spotlights for the week:

We paid small honorariums to the young people (all of whom are unemployed) this week, and this is only possible with your support.

Highlights of the week

  • A special thanks to those of you who joined the 10/10/10 campaign this week, especially one of our “mothers”, Ann Bown. Special shoutout also to Yvonne Lautenbach who gives a regular monthly amount. We need to raise close to $1000 (R17k) per week but we are not reaching that, so we really appreciate whatever support you are giving. I have started reaching out to Capitec bank (since all our young people have an account with them) and hope to set up meetings with them in next week.
  • As part of the 10/10/10 campaign, Arone’s mother handcrafted eight blue bibs. Some of the young ambassadors will wear this when speaking to people about 10/10/10.
  • Cleo and Masixole applied for their French visas! Thank you to our anonymous donor for their visa fees.
  • Hope Africa concluded their workshops on Gender-based violence. The young people say they learnt a lot and will implement what they have learnt.
  • We were hoping to start selling drums at the new St Peter’s market (facing the sea) from today but will only start next Saturday. If you are in Hermanus, please come and visit this market on a Saturday morning.
  • Wilma, Siya and I met with the AVReQ Centre (Study of the Afterlife of Violence and the Reparative Quest) at Stellenbosh University on Friday to talk through the “transgenerational wellness” project over the next three years. This is a wonderful project, and we will all learn much from it! Watch this space…
  • Some of our young people are attending the Christian-Muslim dialogue at Volmoed over this weekend. Last night (Friday evening) we had Muslim and Christian prayers and teaching and dialogue will continue today.
