WhatsApp weekly update 8–12 September 2025

Thanks to everyone who supports this important work! 62% young unemployed people in South Africa represents 2.1 million young adults. It is important to move beyond the statistics to the names and faces, stories, hopes and dreams of these young adults … and do something about it. South Africa cannot move forward with such a high youth unemployment rate. “Nature abhors a vacuum” and we should not be surprised at high crime levels or substance abuse or depression if we do not tackle this crisis head-on.

One way to help …

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Clive, a local pastor, who purchased two of our hand-made drums. If you’re new to our offerings, we craft drums in a range of sizes, priced at R900, R1200, R1500, and R1800. You can find more details about the drums [here].

A very small decorative drum is available for R350. Simply send me a WhatsApp to 0847351835 if you are interested to buy one. Payment can be made at this account: https://volmoedyouth.org.za/donate/vyltp-eft-donation/.

We also have the Mandela and Tutu drums, as well as a newly built larger drum – approximately 75cm high with a 40cm diameter. Please make an offer for these drums.

Highlights of the week

  • Interest in the 10/10/10 campaign is growing steadily. Our young ambassadors have already been approached by several individuals eager to get involved and sign up.
  • Tristan Pringle (someone who attended our launch in 2016) came to visit us yesterday. He is now 38 years old and has some interesting ideas about how we could move forward. He has some friends who did the MPhil at UCT business school and hopes to get their ideas about how to move the project forward. Should we stay small or move to the next level?
  • We continue to thank La Pentola and The Rock restaurants for their contributions to the meals. Please support these restaurants for their admirable and consistent support. If other restaurants can join, that will be great!
  • Please also visit the market at St Peter’s in Hermanus on a Saturday morning. It is still small and it can only grow with more feet.
  • This week I saw the Deans of the George and Grahamstown Cathedrals, who welcomed us so warmly during our visit to the National Arts Festival, as well as Bishop Edwin Pockpass of the George Anglican diocese and Fr Russel who hosted the young people at his house in George. They all give their warmest regards and blessings.
  • Contact has been made with a group in Hermanus called PROBUS – these are retired business-people in Hermanus. We shall meet with them soon!
