Hi everyone

This morning, three Volmoed Youth leadership team members (Rene August, Wilma Jakobsen and I) will attend a memorial service for Mthunzi Gxashe. Who is that (you may ask)? Mthunzi was Arch Tutu’s left and right-hand man. He was a gentle-man in every way, humble and a true servant-leader. He was also married to the Tutus’ eldest daughter, Thandeka. Please keep her –especially her health – and the children in your prayers at this time.

Thanks to everyone who supports this important work! 62% young unemployed people in South Africa represents 2.1 million young adults. It is important to move beyond the statistics to the names and faces, stories, hopes and dreams of these young adults … and do something about it. South Africa cannot move forward with such a high youth unemployment rate. “Nature abhors a vacuum” and we should not be surprised at high crime levels or substance abuse or depression if we do not tackle this crisis head-on.

Friends: The 62% youth unemployment rate in South Africa is the greatest challenge we face as a country. VYLTP tries to tackle this challenge head-on and we are learning many lessons which we hope can be replicated nationally. Thanks to all of you for your support and encouragement. On 16 June 2026, the Volmoed Youth Leadership Training Programme (VYLTP) marks a decade of changing lives. Over the past ten years, we’ve walked alongside young, unemployed South Africans as they rediscover hope, build confidence, and reclaim a sense of purpose.

Today, VYLTP stands as a beacon of dignity and opportunity for youth striving toward a better future. One of our proudest current initiatives is The Volmoed Drummers — a vibrant project you can explore in more detail here.
